This guide describes the most effective pay to play methods to train the Woodcutting skill. The experience rate estimates in this guide do not incorporate the use of any experience boosting items or bonus experience and assume that the best possible hatchet is being used for the stated Woodcutting level.
Woodcutting is a gathering skill which typically involves collecting logs from different types of trees. Additionally, while cutting ivy or trees which grant logs players have a chance of spawning a bird's nest. Bird's nests can contain ringsbird's eggsraven eggstree seedsand fruit tree seeds and they can also be crushed to obtain a crushed nest worth 3, coins.
Chopping crystal trees gives a chance of obtaining crystal geodes which can be shattered to obtain gemscrystal triskelion fragments, and crystal weapon seeds. Hatchets are required to chop wood. Levelling up the Woodcutting skill increases the rate at which players gain resources and experience while woodcutting.
As players level up they are also able to use better hatchets which are more efficient. To gain the best experience rates possible, players are strongly recommended to use the highest level hatchet available to them. In addition to Woodcutting level requirements, hatchets require certain Attack levels to be wielded. However players are able to use a hatchet without equipping it, as hatchets held in the inventory or tool belt are automatically used to cut wood.
To save inventory space, players are strongly advised to add their hatchet to their tool belt or equip it. Once a hatchet is added to the tool belt it cannot be removed, but players can add a higher level hatchet to their tool belt if the hatchet currently stored in the tool belt is inferior to the one being added.
Players can add hatchets which they do not currently have a high enough Woodcutting level to use to their tool belt. If the hatchet stored in a player's tool belt requires a higher Woodcutting level to use than the player currently possesses, the hatchet will function as the best available hatchet at the player's current Woodcutting level.
Players with at least level 22 Invention can discover how to augment hatchets. This allows the player to create augmented crystal hatchets or augmented dragon hatchets by using augmentors on crystal hatchets or dragon hatchets.
At the same Invention level players can discover how to make tool gizmos. A tool gizmo may be added to an augmented hatchet to give it perks. The following perks may be useful to players training Woodcutting:. This perk has an increased chance to activate on level 20 items. Note this does not apply to crystal trees or chopping ivy. Use of an augmented crystal hatchet costs at most 0.
This cost can be reduced by researching charge drain improvements or by adding the Efficient perk or Enhanced Efficient to the item.

The superior scrimshaw lasts for 4 hours but it is untradeable. Inferior and superior scrimshaws award the same amount of additional experience when destroying a log.
